SpecialtyNetworkSllc – The University of Oxford has become the first UK institution to grant full access to ChatGPT Edu, OpenAI’s AI tool designed for education. The rollout follows a year-long pilot program and forms part of a five-year partnership with OpenAI, announced earlier this year.
Professor Anne Trefethen, Oxford’s pro-vice-chancellor for digital, described the launch as an “exciting step” in the university’s digital journey. She explained that AI could accelerate research, spark innovation, and help tackle global challenges.
“All our students can now use ChatGPT Edu as an accessible study tool,” Prof. Trefethen said. “It enriches and personalises their learning while opening new opportunities to explore and create.”

Unlike standard AI models, ChatGPT Edu was created specifically for universities. It provides greater privacy and security, ensuring that all data remains within the institution. This makes it safer for academic use compared to public versions of AI tools.
The rollout builds on a successful pilot involving 750 students, academics, and staff from different colleges and departments. Their feedback confirmed its potential to improve learning and research across disciplines.
According to Jayna Devani, OpenAI’s international education lead, Oxford is “setting a new standard for how AI can enrich higher education.” She stressed that access for all students and staff ensures the entire community gains the skills and training needed for the AI era.

Alongside the tool itself, Oxford will provide training sessions on ChatGPT Edu and other generative AI platforms. These courses will highlight ethical usage, critical thinking, and responsible application, ensuring students use AI to support—not replace—their academic work.
With this move, Oxford blends centuries of tradition with cutting-edge technology. It also positions itself as a leader in integrating AI into modern education.
