SpecialtyNetworkSllc – Volkswagen Group is accelerating its digital transformation through a new five-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The deal connects 43 factories worldwide via the company’s Digital Production Platform (DPP), making it one of the largest industrial AI deployments in the automotive sector.

At 13 Volkswagen plants, assembly line workers no longer depend on manuals when technical issues arise. Instead, they use an AI tool called KI4UPS, which pinpoints faults within seconds. As a result, troubleshooting times are significantly reduced, and production efficiency improves.
Moreover, KI4UPS is just one of 1,200 AI applications in use across Volkswagen operations. These systems also support predictive maintenance, optimize supply chains, and enhance vehicle quality control.
The Digital Production Platform plays a crucial role in Volkswagen’s AI strategy. It standardizes data and IT systems across all factories, allowing AI solutions to be deployed faster and more effectively.
“The Digital Production Platform is the digital nervous system of our factories,” said Hauke Stars, Member of the Board of Management for IT at Volkswagen Group. “It is also the key to a future of AI-powered production.”
In addition, Volkswagen has rolled out Guided Vehicle Completion at 13 plants. This tool provides real-time AI insights during final assembly, ensuring workers complete tasks with greater precision.

AWS delivers the cloud infrastructure behind Volkswagen’s AI push. Consequently, factories can process real-time data more effectively and introduce AI tools more quickly.
Volkswagen and AWS first partnered in 2019. However, this new extension demonstrates a deeper commitment to scaling AI capabilities across the company’s global network.
The automotive industry faces intense challenges, from electrification to global supply chain disruptions. Therefore, Volkswagen sees AI as a powerful tool to boost efficiency, reduce costs, and accelerate production.
“Our ambition is to become the global automotive tech driver,” Stars emphasized. “To achieve this, we must digitalize and connect every part of our company.”
